Hyundai to Launch New Bayon-Based SUV and Compact Electric SUV in India by March 2027

New Delhi Hyundai Motor India is gearing up for a major product offensive, with the Korean automaker confirming plans to introduce two all-new SUV nameplates in the Indian market before the end of the 2027 financial year.

The plans, detailed in the company’s FY25-26 investor presentation, are part of a strategic push to reclaim market share and strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive mid-size and compact SUV segments.

The first will be a mid-size SUV, while the second will be a locally developed compact electric SUV Hyundai’s first new nameplates in India in over four years, setting the stage for an even bigger product rollout planned for later in the decade.

Next-Gen Bayon to Slot Below the Creta

The new mid-size SUV will be based on the next-generation Hyundai Bayon, which is currently sold in European markets. Internally codenamed Bc4i, the model will measure approximately 4.18 metres in length and will be positioned slightly below the Creta in the mid-size segment.

Speaking at Hyundai Motor India’s Q4 FY2026 earnings call, Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg confirmed that the upcoming model would measure more than four metres in length, reinforcing expectations that the new Bayon will not enter the compact SUV segment as previously speculated.

Design-wise, the India-spec Bayon is expected to look dramatically different from its hatchback-like predecessor. Spy images reveal that the next-gen Hyundai Bayon will have a split headlamp setup with “ice-cube” LED projector headlamps with high-mounted LED daytime running lamps, 16-inch alloys, chunky body cladding, a sharply raked tailgate with prominent integrated spoiler, and new connected LED tail-lights.

Under the hood, Hyundai is taking the efficiency-first route. The SUV is expected to feature a naturally aspirated petrol engine alongside a CNG powertrain utilizing a dual-cylinder setup. This model is likely to become Hyundai’s first CNG-powered SUV exceeding four metres in length.

A Locally Developed EV to Take on the Nexon EV

The second launch will be a homegrown electric SUV designed specifically for Indian buyers. Codenamed HE1i, the EV will be underpinned by a modified version of Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, similar to what is used in the global Hyundai Inster. Production is slated to take place at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu, with battery packs sourced locally.

The electric micro SUV is likely to measure around 3.8 metres in length with a wheelbase of around 2580mm. It is expected to be offered with two battery packs with a capacity of 42kWh and 49kWh. Both come with a front-axle-mounted electric motor. Reports indicate the EV could deliver a certified range of up to 500 km on a single charge, putting it in direct competition with the Tata Nexon EV and Tata Punch EV.

Design cues spotted during test runs include pixel-pattern LED lights at the rear, flush door handles, roof rails, and a boxy design broadly inspired by the global Hyundai Inster.

The Bigger Picture

Hyundai’s twin-launch strategy mirrors how rivals like Maruti Suzuki have successfully fielded multiple products in overlapping segments. Tarun Garg, CEO of Hyundai India, stated that these upcoming nameplates are expected to act as “powerful catalysts” for the brand’s next growth phase.

Industry expectations point to a launch window between late 2026 and March 2027, with the Bayon-based SUV likely to be priced from around ₹13 lakh on-road and the new electric SUV starting at approximately ₹12 lakh on-road, although Hyundai has yet to confirm pricing officially.

With the next-generation Creta also expected to grow in size and move further upmarket, the new Bayon-based SUV is set to plug the gap left in Hyundai’s lineup — giving the brand a sharper, more layered approach to India’s most fiercely contested SUV segments.
